This equipment package monitors traffic and road conditions by collecting information from passing vehicles that are equipped with a transponder or other short range communications device. The probe data collected by this equipment package may include link travel times, average speeds, road conditions, and any other data that can be measured and communicated by passing vehicles. This equipment package consists of roadside equipment that communicates with passing vehicles using dedicated short range communications, collects the information provided by the vehicles, and forwards this information back to the Traffic Management Subsystem.

General Functional Requirements
1 -
The field element shall use toll and parking tags on passing vehicles for traffic data link time calculations and send to the controlling center; tag identities will be removed to ensure anonymity. 2 -
The field element shall include equipment that monitors traffic conditions (e.g., average speed) by communicating with passing vehicles equipped with a transponder or other short range communications device; also called smart probes. 3 -
The field element shall include equipment that monitors road conditions by communicating with passing vehicles equipped with a transponder or other short range communications device; also called smart probes. 4 -
The field element shall aggregate, format, and store collected vehicle smart probe data (traffic and road conditions data), calculate link travel times and processed road condition data, and send to future passing vehicles. 5 -
The field element shall provide roadside beacon equipment operational status to the center. 6 -
The field element shall provide roadside beacon equipment fault indication to the center for repair.
