Bridge Instrumentation and Systems

Status:

Planned

Description:

The St. Johns River and its tributaries divide the transportation network in the study area along a north?south line south of the City of Jacksonville’s CBD and along an east?west line from the central business district eastward to the Atlantic Ocean. This unusual configuration has resulted in seven major bridges spanning these waterways. Particularly noteworthy is the lift-span bridge (Fuller Warren Bridge) on I-95 at the St. Johns River crossing - it is one of only two draw bridges in the nation on the interstate system. Acting as constriction points, these bridges are the cause of recurring congestion that affects the adjacent arterials as well as the interstate system. As a result, the City of Jacksonville registered exceedances or near-exceedances of air quality standards in the vicinity of these bridges.
