This element represents the connection to other FDOT, County, and City Traffic Management Centers in the Southwest Florida Region. This element is used in the architecture to show a consistent interface that supports the exchange of operational traffic data and control information between TMCs in the Southwest Florida Region. Communication between these centers uses a mesh topology - any traffic management center can communicate directly with any other traffic management center. This element also represents traffic operations in adjacent jurisdictions that may also require coordination, particularly during major incidents.
District 1 is a large geographic region characterized by small cities separated by rural and agricultural regions. This geography suggests that the district can naturally be split into several subregions. Communications within a subregion is frequent. Communications between subregions will be infrequent and generally only be required for major emergencies and events that broadly affect the district. The subregions that were identified in the workshop were as follows:
Sarasota/Manatee (all cities in Sarasota and Manatee Counties and the two counties) – this region would also coordinate with Charlotte County and the District 7 Traffic Management Center (e.g., Sunshine Skyway incidents), Bartow, and the relevant I-75 Control Center.
Lee County Region (all cities in Lee County and Lee County) – this region would also coordinate with Collier County and (possible) coordination with Charlotte County, Bartow, .
City of Lakeland Region (the City of Lakeland) – this region would coordinate with the city of Winter Haven and Polk County, and Bartow.
Collier County Region (includes all cities in Collier County and the county) – this region also coordinates with Lee County, and Bartow.
Charlotte County Region (includes Punta Gorda and the County) – this region coordinates with Sarasota and Lee Counties)
Inter-regional communications will be focused on the Counties, with cities coordinating with other cities within the region and the local county.
